It was another hard faught battel by JMS, but JTG pulled it out (5-4) in the end with a run scoring single hit my Tim Cramer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Zack Terry hit another long ball, his second of the season, on the way to forcing extra innings with JTG.  David Gray had another strong pitching performance.

Everyone played well and JMS will be ready for our next challenger this Saturday.  Great game JTG…congrats.

The J&M Schwarz 2011 season kicked off with a family trip to the Adirondacks.  The weekend getaway featured peer leadership activities, team building exercises, and of course baseball.  The fun-filled weekend was capped by a spirited scrimmage.  Team “Older and Should Know Better” squeaked by with a narrow win and showed those younguns a thing or two (Team Older may have been worse for the wear though!).  Without a doubt the biggest win of all was the new family, dubbed Green Machine, that emerged from the weekend.  Members of the Green Machine: Zane Nelson, Christian Brennan, Jakob Lemperle, Hunter Kosich, Niko Dinovo, Korey Reedy, Jacob Oertel, David Gray, J.J. Papielion, Ty Greminger, Zack Terry, and Ricky Umholtz.

Memorial Day beings the start of summer and the end of regular season baseball for CLL. To celebrate both, the JMS family and the extended families partied on Memorial Day at Cook Park. The traditional meal of Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and salads filled the tables while the coaches challenged each other to Ladder Ball games. After eating our fill, we headed to the JPW field for a Home Run Derby and wiffle ball game with a football game thrown in before lunch. Everyone had a great time and thanks to our new family members of the Mazzone’s, Andersen’s, Jared and Duncan. » Continue Reading

The first game of the day featured the cousins playing under the hot sun. Jimmy Morrison and Kris Scarano took the hill for the battle of the day. Things appeared to be going Vellano’s way with 2 runs being scored early. The JMS squad tried everything to score until the bottom of the 4th inning when Brian Kristel launched a rocket to the International Field giving JMS the 3-2 lead. Kris then shut down the game with his awesome pitching and being under the 85 limit pitch count. Bottom of the 5th again brought Brian up to bat and again sent another ball over the fence for his second home run of the day bringing the final to 7 to 2. JMS will be back to work Monday night taking on the gang from VFW.

As we faced off with EHC last night, we were ready to face Mono on the hill. After 1 run scored in the top of the first we knew what we had to do. The team bucked down and went to work answering the run. As the night wore on, the outs piled up for both teams. Unfortunately a couple errors let EHC take the lead 5 - 1 in the 4th inning. We battled back to 6 - 4 but could get no further as the end of the 6th inning came too quickly. Outstanding pitching and defense from both teams made for a nice spring evening of baseball.

The forecast was calling for no rain but as the teams arrived for batting practice and warmups, there was a fine mist falling. The teams buckled down and went to work. Ben Kline took the mound striking out the likes of Tommy Kretzler to start off the game. In the next inning Ben came back to hit a RBI single. As the air dried, 99 quickly took the lead with no looking back. Megs hit a long home run over the left field fence with the ball landing in the middle of the International field. As for JMS we answered with a 3 run shot from Brian Kristel to center field bringing the score to 11 to 5 in favor of 99 Restaurant. Unfortunately this night was not to be for the family. With plenty of baseball left to play, we will regroup to face EHC on Friday, Vellano on Saturday at 2pm and VFW on Monday night.

 Ricky Umholtz

Congratulations Ricky Umholtz!  You are Colonie LL’s player of the week!

Ricky Umholtz is this week’s player of the week for his accomplishments both on and off the field.

Ricky has played the catcher position in an outstanding manner this season, and been a leader in the J&M’s clubhouse the entire season. Saturday he scored 2 runs and drove in another in J&M’s win over Vellano Brothers.

Off the field, Ricky recently attended the peer-leadership retreat sponsored by Sand Creek Middle School for the second year.  Participation in the peer leadership program is by invitation only, based on an evaluation of academic and personal criteria.  The program builds on leadership skills and fosters reaching group consensus by ensuring everyone’s opinion is heard and valued. Ricky has also assumed an active role in acclimating a new classmate from El Salvador that speaks no English to Sand Creek. Academically, Ricky consistently achieves high honor roll status and has been selected to enroll in advance math.

Whether on or off the field, J&M’s catcher is always willing to provide support, encouragement and leadership.

Over the last 5 games, the family has gone 3-2 with winds over Vellano, VFW and league leaders Elks. We’ve had some hard losses against JTG & DG. As a whole, the team is coming together with strong pitching from Ben, Kris & JJ as starters and relief pitching from David. Some spectacular catches in the outfield and at home plate have been made. As the future games come along, the family will be ready to play ball. We are back to the field tonight to take on 99.

The JMS family regrouped and took to the field again on Tuesday night against a strong 99 squad. David again started the night on the hill for us with JJ and Kris helping out in relief pitching at the end. We kept our heads high but just could not figure out pitching on 99’s best of Tommy, Mike, & Brendan. Ben made a nice play robbing a 99 player of a base hit. Brian hit a powerful shot to left field to get on base. Matteo had an awesome over the shoulder catch in right field and Tyler made a beautiful throw from the same place to home plate to stop 99 from scoring any more runs. We have tonight off and will be back to practice to take on the Colonie Elks on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
