COLONIE 10's NEW YORK STATE CHAMPS
Colonie entered Tuesday's Chamionship game in the drivers's seat. Their counterpart Fayettville-Manlius had plans of their own. They scored 1 run in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd and Colonie quickly found itself down 3-0 after 2 innings. Showing just how tough they were, Josh Longe smacked a "moonshot" 3-run HR blast in the 3rd inning(ala Barry Bonds) and Colonie quickly tied the game up. Fayettville wasnt done though, in the 4th, with 2 outs, they put 2 hits together to regain the lead 4-3. The score stayed that way all the way to the bottom of the 6th inning. Colonie was down to 3 outs left, if they lose, they must play 1 more game on Wednesday---Colonie was having none of that!!! Cameron Apple and Nolan Smith lead off the 6th with 2 walks and Nick Donato smacked a single up the middle and quickly Colonie gained momentum as bases were loaded and no outs. After an infield fly out, Mike Mueller hit a laser beam single to right as Colonie tied the game up and then gambled for the win as they sent the runner from 2nd on the hit---Fayettville was up to the challenge and made a great throw at home for out number 2. Enter Ray Osterhout, Ray struts to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs. After working a 3-2 count, Ray smacks a shot between third and shortstop and it found its to left field for the big hit as the runner from third came in with the game winning run!!! As Ray touches 1st base, the entire Colonie squad rushes the field to tackle the hitting hero and the celebration was on!!!!

Ben Contento pitched 4 masterful innings in relief, his line was 4.0 innings, 3 hits, 5 strikeouts and just 1 walk  as he earned the

win on the mound. Other offensive highlights were Cameron Apple, Mike Mueller and Ray Osterhout finishing with 2 hits on the day and Ben Contento having 3 hits.

This marks the 7th time in Colonie's 52 year history that we've earned a NYS Championship and it's also our 3rd title in the last 5 years!! There are a total of 4 in the 12's division (1973, 1980, 1987 and 2004) and now 3 in the 10's division (1998, 2003 and now 2007).

This group of kids, coaches and parents certainly enjoyed this miracle run which began June 16th to today. Weary and glad it's over :), but memories that will last a lifetime. The entire league says "congratulations" and bring those Champonship flags to the banquet please!!! :)

The 10 Year Old team won the winners bracket of the state tournament today. They played another undefeated team.  The combined records for the four state tournament teams was 35-0.  This is a double elimination tournament so they still have one more victory ahead of them to win the state championship.

The 10's played a very tough team from Fayetteville Manlius and won by a score of 5-3.
The big hits were as follows:

  • Nick Donato hit a 2 run homerun in the first inning.
  • Ben Contento hit a 2RBI single in the 3rd inning.
  • Mike Mueller hit the final RBI double in the 5th inning.
Our pitching again ruled the day.
  •  Ryan Nicholson pitched 80 pitches over 3.2 innings and held a very game FM team to 2 hits.
  • Josh "Sandman" Longe came in for the final 7 outs to put the game away.

The defensive play of the game came from our ace catcher Andrew Patentrager.  Andrew threw out a runner trying to steal and twarted the Fayetteville rally.
Now our kids have run off 10 consecutive victories, and are on the brink of greatness.   There are 640 little leagues in New York State, and we find ourselves a game away from winning it all.
The 10s have won their first game at the State Tournament!

Colonie had it's closest game of this run.  They ended the game up by one run, pitching to Huntington with the bases loaded for Huntington.

The pitchers glued together a very gutty performance.  Nick Donato threw for 14 outs and handed the ball to Ben Contento for the last 4 outs.

The hits were spread around as the usually are.  This lineup hits from top to bottom without exception.

Scotia NY Monday July 30th
COLONIE 10's WIN A THRILLER 4-2!!!

On July 17th when the Colonie 10's won the district championship, they were informed of their big "challenge" in the sectional pairings. They had to win 3 tough road games against other district champions and all in "unfriendly" surroundings. Well, these kids love a challenge i guess!!!
Monday night in Scotia, Colonie scored 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and 1 more in the 5th and hung on for dear life to win 4-2 and now advance to the Section 2 Championship game, which will be held at Colonie.
In the 2nd, Andrew Patrenger drew a 1 out walk, then Evan Carey walked with 2 outs and Ryan Nicholson roped a big double to left center as Patrenger blazed in to score!! In the 3rd, Zach Gallagher led off with a walk and Nick Donato reached on an infield miscue. As Mike Mueller was grounding out to shortstop, pinch runner Nolan Smith came in to score and Mueller had an RBI and Colonie a 2-0 lead!!! 3 pitches later, Nick Donato came in to score on a wild pitch and Colonie staked a 3-0 lead halfway through the game!! Scotia cut it to 3-1 in the top of the 5th, but Colonie had an answer as Kevin Ryan had a leadoff walk and later scored on Nick Donato's double as Colonie went back up by 3 4-1 entering the 6th. In the 6th inning, Scotia cut it to 4-2, had the bases loaded with 1 out....about 200 fans from both sides hollering after every pitch....enter Ben Contento, Ben faces 2 hitters and throws strike outs to both and Colonie celabrates the hard fought win!!!
Pitching was solid and strong, as it has been the entire tournament thus far. Today it was Nick Donato who got the start. Nick pitched 4 2-3 innings (14 outs) and recorded 8 by strikeout as he was in command all night. Josh Longe recorded 2 outs (1 strikeout) before Contento came in to slam the door shut!!!
Web gem tonight was:
Kevin Ryan catching a sure game tying double in the 5th inning!!
Now it's on to the Section 2 final Wednesday. It will be Colonie's 2nd straight year an all-star team has made a sectional final game as last year our 11 yr old group made a great run!! For you history buffs:

  • Last time Colonie won a section 2 championship? (2004-12's)
  • Last time Colonie 10's won a section 2 championship? (2003)

Come on out Wednesday and see if our 10's can take that big step and advance to a State tournament!!! Good Luck kids!!!!

Saturday July 28th New Hartford NY
The 10's continue their journey through the section 2 playoffs. They played the District 10 Champion team from New Hartford today and ended the game after 4 innings with a score of 11-1.

10 Year Old All-Stars Shine in Sectional Showdown... on the road.
Big Bad Ben Contento took matters into his own hands as he climbed the mound in Sherrill NY. Our kids had a showdown against the District 9 Champion VVS Team. Ben threw every pitch in this game, with an incredible 10 strikeouts (out of 18 total outs) against a district champion. One fan said "He hits like David Wright, and throws like Pedro Martinez...where did they find this kid?" Ben held the District 9 Champions to just 1 hit in this milestone sectional shut out. Colonie won a 4-0 game that was played in just 70 minutes. The offensive support came from a familiar list of power hitters:
Nicky "D" Donato 2 RBI
Mike Mueller 1 RBI
Ben Contento 1 RBI
The 2 Web Gems are as follows:

  • Ryan Nicholsons diving catch while playing 3rd Base
  • Ray Osterhout doing his Jose Reyes impersonation and stealing a hit from deep in the hole at short stop...

The boys have another tough road game in Utica on Saturday. We don't know who and we don't know when, as soon as we find out, we will post it here. Clear your schedule for a road trip.
The PAL team is alive.
Following a heartbreaking 2-1 loss Wednesday night against American, the boys came back with a dramatic extra innings win over West Albany on Thursday. Colonie was down 1-0 going into the bottom of the 6th when Dan Sopko hit his second home run in as many games to tie it up. In the bottom of the 7th the boys loaded the bases, and then with 2 outs Sean Connolly singled to left to drive in Joey Bruno with the game winning run. Corey Buckley pitched a strong 5 and 1/3 innings. Tommy Walsh came in to finish the 6th and shut down West Albany in the 7th for the win. The boys head over to Delmar on Sunday at noon for a showdown with Tri-Village and the chance to play in the championship series next week.

Introducing.... The District 13 Champions!! Colonie Little Leagues Undefeated 10 Year Old All-Stars!!!
